Panama's
banking system has experienced remarkable growth in recent decades. In the last
20 years there have been mergers, transformations and incorporations of new
banks that have made Panama one of the most important financial centers in
Latin America.
The
Panamanian banking sector has certain qualities that differentiate it from
other countries in the region:
- Absence
of a Central Bank
- Use
of the dollar as the local currency
- Territorial
taxation
- Direct
discount" law
- Law
of encrypted accounts and banking secrecy.
- Low
entry barriers
- High competition
